Winter on the Green, WInter Sports

Lion Denise Lenz is asking for help on Sunday January 22, 2012 to run the games at the Breidert Green. She has three games set up, hopefully there will be enough snow to play them: Two on one Hockey, Sled racing, and Punt and Pass.

Lion Denise needs six helpers. If more than six Lions show up they can join the kids and play the games.

2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A San Francisco cable car holds 60 people. This blog was viewed about 3,400 times in 2011. If it were a cable car, it would take about 57 trips to carry that many people.

District Governor Speaks to Frankfort Lions

A message from Lion District 1B Governor Paul Benetazzo

Ok 1B we have a new State Secretary Treasurer. Her name is Michelle Faires. She lives 15 minutes from the state office, and has experience in accounting and office management. I look forward to working with her. She is a non Lion so she has no prior opinions about Lions. So now that this is done…..

I used to run marathons, obviously part of running 26.2 miles is a great amount of training. Part of training and trying improve my time. I did a training workout called “negative splits.” What this entailed was to run the 2nd half of your workout faster than the 1st half. For example if you had a 1hr workout. You would run out for 31 minutes. Then you have to get back to where you started in 29 minutes. That is what is called a negative split. So you ask why am I telling you this, do I want you to run. Sure it’s great excercise so go out and run. But that is not what this is about.

The end of 1st half of the Lions year is fast approaching. So now we have to pick up the pace, cause we are going to have a negative split for the 2nd half of this year. We need to double time our efforts towards Membership, Retention, Extention, etc. So I am picking up the pace, and I asking the rest of the 1B race team to pick it up also. So grab your water bottles and stay hydrated, eat your carbs, don’t forget to stretch, and lets moving.

Looking forward to a great finish.

Lion Paul “kenyan” Benetazzo

District 1B lead runner.

Words from ILP Wing-Kum Tan

A message from the International President Wing-Kun Tam, copied from the December 2011 Lions International website.

Dear Lion,First of all, in this season of belief, let me offer best wishes to all my fellow Lions, their loved ones, friends and families. We have come a long way in five months. My belief in the power of what every Lion can do to change the world is as strong as ever. The early success of our campaign to plant 1 million trees makes me both proud and so humble. Whether it’s planting trees in lands scarred by the tsunami in Japan or tornadoes in the United States, or planting trees to restore our planet’s critical forests in Africa or South Asia, we have succeeded in unifying Lions all over the world. These acts of service are fun and rewarding to do. They bring clubs together and bring smiles to ourselves and to people in the communities we serve.Through mid-November, together we planted more than 5.7 MILLION trees in more than 60 countries. Isn’t that amazing?

Some Lions ask me if I will set another target.I politely say “no” because I believe the target lies in each of our hearts. It is the Lions who determine how far we go and how many trees we plant. Every tree counts, even if you can plant only one. Every member matters, too.

Planting trees is certainly good for the environment. But to me, it’s also a strong symbol of our association’s commitment to the future and a reason to invite friends, families and others to join us in making it happen.

You see, if we as Lions can identify the right tree saplings, plan them in the right place, and take care of them – then certainly we can also invite a new member, give them a meaningful role in our club, and nurture them like we would a member of the family.

This is why I am also proud and humbled by Lions’ response to this year’s “My Club, My Family” initiative. We have strong membership growth this year, exceeding a 16,000 net gain through mid-November. But inviting new members is easy; treating them as if they were family and involving them in meaningful service will ensure they stay.

So my fellow Lions, with all we have done in five months, I am now happy to say that “I Believe” has clearly transformed into “We Believe.”It’s because of you and your belief in what we can do. Your belief, and more importantly, your actions, have given me the greatest gift of all as your international president.

Consider this special issue a holiday gift to all Lions. The story’s message is that Lions are indeed a precious gift to our communities.May the warm glow of family be part of your regular household and your Lions club as you believe in our great service mission.

Sincerely,

Wing-Kun Tam

International President

Children Know Peace

The students of Summit Hill, and Hickory Creek Schools did an outstanding job of developing posters for the theme “Children Know Peace.”

All posters were viewed and judged at the November Lions Club Meeting.

Lions awarded prizes to the first, second, and third places from each school. From these entries, two first place posters were forwarded to District 1B for the next round of judging. District winners are judged against winners of all Districts in the State, and State winners make it to the International judging.

Frankfort Lions feel at least one entry is good enough to make it that far. You be the judge. Click on any poster in the gallery. A horizontal slide show of larger images will appear. Click on the “LIKE” button at the bottom of any poster for the ones you think best depict Children Know Peace.

The Frankfort Lions congratulate the winning artists and commend them for their outstanding effort:

District 161, Summit Hill

1. Michael Trost

2. Veronica Carvantes

3. Tara Tischer

District 157C, Hickory Creek

1. Andrew Brozovic

2. Ashley Chung

3. Dylan Murphy

Winning posters are the bottom six, but are not shown in the order of the names listed above.
